Teaching Gratitude in the Month of November

If you’re like many Christian parents and teachers, you’re wondering how to help your children rise above the hype and think about more eternalĀ things during this season. Here are some ideas to help you get a head start on the season by getting kids to ponder some things for which they should be grateful.

Idea # 1. Put Your Coat On Before You Go Outside!

The temperature is falling. The changing seasons remind us that God has created a world in which change is inevitable. That’s a good thing. He wants us to keep growing and maturing and that requires change. The changing of the seasons help keep the global environment in balance. Cooler temperatures remind us that God is in control of the weather and seasons. Thank God for creating the seasons and using them to give us a better place to live!

Idea # 2. Oooh! That’s Beautiful!

Trees are changing color. Who doesn’t notice and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage? It’s interesting that while we may dread the passing of Summer, the beauty of Fall reminds us that God brings beauty to every season of life. Many of us fear getting old and children often observe grandparents aging and even passing away. Is there anything good about old age? Absolutely! The wisdom and maturity that comes with age is something to treasure and value. For Christians, death merely opens the door to greater life for us. Thank God for the beauty He brings to every season of life.

Idea # 3. Pass The Mashed Potatoes!

Yes, it seems that eating is part of the holiday tradition. And with the gathering of family members around the table, it’s appropriate to bow our heads and give thanks to God for His provision. But why wait until Thanksgiving Day? Why not start earlier in the month? Why not start tonight or tomorrow? You could say, “You know, Thanksgiving is coming, but God has blessed us with many things as a family, so we’re going to start thanking Him early so we can be reminded of His provision more than just one day this month.” Ā Thank God for the bountiful provision we enjoy!

Idea # 4. Touchdown!

Okay, so there are kids and families who don’t spend every weekend watching football, but fewĀ of us living in the United States are untouched by the frenzy that often accompanies the victory (or defeat) of someone’s favorite team. And while sports and sports celebrities often demonstrate a negative example of behavior, we can also learn good things from sports. For most, games are just entertainment. That’s a good thing. Then there’s the power and value of teamwork, overcoming adversity, and good wholesome competition. Thank God for the things we can learn from watching or playing sports!

If you’ll look around, you’ll find lots of opportunities to teach gratitude during the month of November. Who knows, you might find yourself continuing the lessons into December and even the New Year!
